I suppose someone was going to do this eventually: an entire subdivision of pseudo-medieval Middle-Earthy houses. It's called "The Shire" and it's in Bend, Oregon. Yes, there are hobbit holes; no, you can't live in them. They're just so you can fool yourself into thinking your neighbors are Bagginses, Gamgees, and Tooks.
Sad, really -- but no more sad than my own lifelong desire to build a hobbit hole. (Sigh.) The unrealized dreams of youth...
