It was found by a father and son in Yorkshire, which used to be Viking territory in England (the Danelaw). Just to give an idea of the scope of this treasure and the Vikings who accrued it, "[t]he ancient objects come from as far afield as Afghanistan in the East and Ireland in the West, as well as Russia, Scandinavia and continental Europe" -- which is just about the Viking range at its peak. The hoard consists of hundreds of smaller pieces (mainly silver) inside this silver cup:
