My brother Brian and sister-in-law Lia have a long (3-year) tradition of extravagant Halloween bashes. This year's party had a medieval theme, as is evident from the shot below. Here B&L are (she's the pretty princess, he's the one with the axe) with their festive All Hallow's spread:

Of course, all this sumptuous medievalry didn't just
happen. It took a great deal of planning and work, mostly by B&L, but also with significant contributions from my sister Melissa (who made their costumes) and me (who held the masking tape and filched almonds). And, no, B&L don't live in a gothic dungeon: the walls are covered with plastic sheets printed to look like masonry. Decorating the walls was a long, arduous task involving masking tape, scissors, a measuring tape, black crepe paper, and a couple of black markers--theoretically like hanging wallpaper, but practically more like wrapping a present from inside the box.

The end result was impressive even in bright light...

... but even more so in the flickering pseudo-flames of prop braziers.

The guests were also tricked out appropriately; sadly, I haven't pictures of everyone, including me. (I was the Bubonic Plague, basically a standard issue Grim Reaper accompanied by a giant rat.) Here's Todd's monk costume:

He even tonsured his hair! That kicked up the authenticity a notch...

Sara(h?) came as King Arthur's squire, Patsy. Here she is, beating a cat against the wall. Rowwr! Rowwr! Rowwr!

Finally, my plague rat, Magnus, posing with the Killer Rabbit. They
both have sharp, pointy teeth...
