Another Hero

"He was trying to save someone else."

I found this story today, of another man who acted in the face of danger and gave his life unselfishly. Waleed Mohammed Shaalan was a 32-year-old Egyptian PhD student; though already severely wounded, he distracted the gunman from another student and was shot instead, and the other student lived.

Which made me think: how many heroes do I meet everyday, and never know -- people who would, in the time of need, act and not run or cower? I would not recognize them, and they may not even recognize themselves. But I think they are heroes nonetheless, because what comes out when we're under pressure is what was already inside.
