Preparing for Pilgrimage

I found Pilgrim's Progress somewhat unsatisfying when I was younger: it was exciting in parts, but I got tired of the symbolic names always reminding me to think pious thoughts during my reading. Apparently, I was reading the book incorrectly. I should have read something like this article first: To Be a Pilgrim: Reading Allegory Rightly.

I've never made it all the way through the pictureless version, but I ADORE Dangerous Journey, a beautifully illustrated version for children. I imagine it's abridged a bit, but the original language is preserved, which I appreciate.
