An uncharacteristically dismal New Year's poem

It's 2007 now, a new year by our arbitrary reckoning.

We run through circles of days,
Marking the sameness of sun and seasons,
Seeing that all that passes, comes again.
We plant a stake in the ground,
Count it when we pass and call it "Time"--
And so we make a line of a circle.
